Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic, debilitating condition that affects our nation's Veterans at staggering rates. The purpose of this study is to examine the ability of a medication (oxytocin) to enhance Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy for Veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PE is a widely used cognitive behavioral intervention (talk therapy) for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In order to accomplish this goal, we are recruiting participants for a clinical trial. Participants enrolled in this trial will complete 10 weeks of a treatment phase, that includes weekly doses of either the investigational study medication or an inactive placebo. In addition, all participants will receive 10 weekly sessions of PE talk therapy. Once per week before each therapy session, participants will take a dose of medication intranasally. This study has the potential to improve patient care practices, advance the science in this area, and decrease public health costs.
This research study aims to determine a less invasive way to assess heart function by taking measurements of the heart while subjects are performing an exercise cardiac MRI. Subjects will undergo two exercise phases and MRI measurements will be taken after each exercise phase. These measurements will be compared to available clinical data (including demographic, hemodynamic, radiologic, and functional) and future outcome data.
The goal of the COSMID (Comparison of Surgery and Medicine on the Impact of Diverticulitis) trial is to determine if elective colectomy is more effective than best medical management for patients with quality of life-limiting diverticular disease. The COSMID trial focuses on both patient-reported outcomes and clinical outcomes that matter to patients. The results are expected to establish an evidence-based approach to the care of millions of patients per year in the United States and help people impacted by this common condition make more informed treatment decisions.
The main objective of this project is to develop a quick and efficient screening instrument to accurately identify individuals with olfactory dysfunction (from all causes of olfactory dysfunction). We hope to systematically develop an olfaction screening instrument that is highly correlated to objective olfaction, as currently, this does not exist. Our overall hypothesis is that we can reliably predict an abnormal objective olfaction score using the screening instrument we develop.
Babies that are born extremely prematurely are at higher risk of developing chronic (long term) lung disease (CLD) and other complications (problems). The purpose of this study is to test the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug called mecasermin rinfabate (rhIGF-1/rhIGTBP-3) or SHP607. The researchers want to find out if SHP607 can help reduce the risk of chronic lung disease in babies born prematurely and if it can help reduce the risk of other complications.
Depression is a very common disorder that is most often chronic or recurrent in nature. Many subjects do not respond adequately to an initial antidepressant treatment trial. Subjects who do not respond adequately to multiple therapeutic interventions are considered to have treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Among the treatment options for subjects with TRD is Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) Therapy.This blinded, randomized, multicenter controlled study is intended to collect evidence that VNS Therapy as an adjunctive therapy improves health outcomes for patients with TRD.
This study is for patients that have been diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer. The purpose of this study is to find out if a targeted immunotherapy treatment will have an effect on specific genes and proteins in tumors. This is a screening study in which a tumor sample will be submitted for testing. Based on results, the participant will be assigned to one of the treatment sub-studies.
This study is an early feasibility study which typically consist of evaluating innovative devices or innovative uses of approved devices. The purpose of this study is to see if an investigational device called preCARDIA Intermittent Balloon Device can limit fluid overload in congested patients with advanced heart failure. This investigational device is a catheter which has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to occlude large vessels but not for the treatment of advanced heart failure. Currently, there are no device-based approaches that are FDA-approved for advanced heart failure. This study will help find out if this device-based approach can improve symptoms and heart function in congested patients with advanced heart failure
Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the 5th leading cause of cancer death in women in the U.S. African-American (AA) women have the lowest survival of any racial/ethnic group,1 yet little is known about factors affecting survival among AAs. The African American Cancer Epidemiology Study (AACES) is a multi-site epidemiologic study of AA women in diverse geographic regions. AACES has enrolled an unprecedented number of AA participants during a previous funding period, 593 AA women with invasive EOC and 752 controls, making AACES the largest study of ovarian cancer in AA women to date. Prior to AACES, no epidemiologic study of ovarian cancer had enrolled more than 150 AA cases and 150 AA controls. Due to comprehensive data collection, pathology assessment and length of follow-up, AACES is uniquely positioned to evaluate factors influencing the survival of EOC in AA women. The causes of the poor outcomes in AA women are likely multifactorial and need to be examined from multiple levels, including factors affecting both the neighborhood social environment and individual level factors.
