Summary

In this study researchers aim to improve the collaborative research efforts of the Center for Rehabilitation Research in Neurological Conditions at the Medical University of South Carolina. The Center is comprised of several laboratories, including: the Communication and Swallowing Laboratory; the Locomotor Energetics and Assessment Laboratory; the Locomotor Rehabilitation Laboratory; the Neuromuscular Assessment Laboratory; and the Upper Extremity Motor Function Laboratory. The PI and investigators will recruit for their current and future studies in the above laboratories from the Clinical Database established here. Studies utilizing the Clinical Database will not include PHI but will only link to the Clinical Database individual patient code. This study is completed by completing a simple screening form with study personnel. Medical care/treatment future participation in studies is not influenced by inclusion in this study. We are also recruiting Healthy Controls for this study.

Summary

Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus; SLE), Systemic Sclerosis (scleroderma; SSc) and Systemic Vasculitis (SV) are relatively rare rheumatic diseases that disproportionately impact the African American community, and particularly African American women. The causes of lupus, scleroderma and vasculitis are unknown, but thought to include both genetic and environmental factors. We are enrolling lupus, scleroderma, and vasculitis patients, and healthy control subjects. This is not a drug study. The purpose of this study is to better understand the factors that predispose people to develop lupus, scleroderma, and vasculitis. Information about medical, social and family history, medications, physical exam findings, and laboratory tests will be collected for analysis. This study will involve approximately 1360 volunteers.

The study will compare two durations of treatment with Octreotide in patients with confirmed esophageal variceal hemorrhage who have undergone successful endoscopy and possible endoscopic therapy for control of bleeding. All procedures including the treatment are the standard of care. Octreotide infusion and endoscopic therapy for esophageal variceal bleeding are not investigational.

The purpose of this study is to collect and evaluate clinical and radiographic outcomes data on patients who have undergone, or will undergo, shoulder replacement surgery. Patients who receive a device from the Equinoxe® Shoulder System, manufactured and distributed by Exactech, Inc as well as patients who receive a device from another shoulder arthroplasty system may be included in this study.

Summary

The aim of this study is to gather information about veterans at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Medical Center (RHJ-VAMC) who've experienced a stroke and are interested in participating in rehabilitation research.

VA principal investigators at the Center for Rehabilitation Research in Neurologic Conditions (CRRNC) conduct stroke rehabilitation research for individuals. CRRNC include laboratories that investigate and assess upper extremity motor function, neuro-stimulation, communication and swallowing, locomotor energetics, locomotor and rehabilitation, and motor performance functions.

Participants will be asked to come to the CRRNC located at the Medical University of South Carolina (77 President Street, Charleston, South Carolina) and fill out a simple screening form with study personnel. Participants may be contacted in the future for qualifying studies.

CREST-2 is two parallel multi-center randomized, observer-blinded endpoint clinical trials. One trial will assess treatment differences between intensive medical management alone compared to carotid endarterectomy procedure plus intensive medical management. The parallel trial will assess treatment differences between intensive medical management alone compared to carotid artery stenting plus intensive medical management. Intensive medical management will involve control of blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, cigarette smoking, and other vascular risk factors.

This study aims to create a database of people and families with hereditary retinal dystrophy in South Carolina. Patients with hereditary retinal dystrophy will be offered genetic analysis and counseling with the MUSC Center for Genomic Medicine and may donate cell samples for basic science research at the Department of Ophthalmology. This study will add to the research knowledge base of disease phenotype and epidemiology, and allow expansion of research to determine mechanism and potential therapy for inherited retinal disease

Summary

The goal of this study is to develop an early systemic sclerosis (SSc) registry in the United States (US). A registry is a group of patients that are observed over time. This is a non-interventional study, meaning that they are no study specific medications to take or procedures to undergo. The specific aims include ongoing assessment of the natural history of early SSc patients by capturing and analyzing clinical data, patient reported outcomes, and laboratory data as seen in the clinic as part of their routine care needs. Additional study visits are not required. This is a multi-center study with sites spread across the U.S. This study is funded by the Scleroderma Research Foundation.

Summary

Elevated pressures in the heart can represent a severe medical condition known as pulmonary hypertension. This can result in chronic right heart failure. An abnormal increase in this pressure during exercise may be represent an early stage of vascular lung disease. This study will investigate the prognostic implications of the measured pressures obtained during exercise while undergoing a right heart catheterization procedure based on a large scale multi-center approach by using retrospective and prospective analysis of hemodynamic data.

Summary

Patients who present to MUSC's Chest Pain Center with acute chest pain and have undergone coronary computerized tomography angiography or triple rule-out computed tomography imaging showing an intermediate stenosis will be prospectively selected. Consented patients will then have their clinical indicated coronary computerized tomography angiography or triple rule-out computed tomography imaging undergo an expedited computed tomography-fractional flow reserve analysis analysis. This analysis will be provided to Chest Pain Center physician of record to aid in downstream patient treatment decision making. Patients will then be followed-up at 3-months via telephone call and electronic medical records review.
