The purpose of this study is to better understand tobacco outcomes using a well-known stop smoking medication called varenicline, counseling and financial incentives among those who use tobacco and cannabis/marijuana. All participants will receive tobacco cessation treatment for 12 weeks. To qualify, participants must be between the ages of 18-40 and use both tobacco and cannabis/marijuana. You do not need to be interested in quitting cannabis/marijuana to qualify. This study is being conducted at three sites: the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC, Behavioral Health Services in Pickens, SC, and the Medical University of South Carolina in Florence, SC.

This research study evaluates the effects of anFDA-approved medication Gabapentin in individuals with Bipolar Disorder who smoke marijuana. Participants in the study will will be assigned to take either Gabapentin or a matched placebo. Study medication will be taken for 17 days. There will be 5 study visits, with 2 MRI brain imaging scans completed. Questionnaires and clinical interview measures will be completed at study visits along with consistent assessment of potential side effects from study medication.

Both withdrawal symptoms and external stressors can contribute to relapse in people that are trying to quit using marijuana. These negative feelings may be more severe in people that also have Major Depressive Disorder, making it especially hard for them to quit. The purpose of this study is to examine differences in withdrawal symptoms and stress response in people with Cannabis Use Disorder that do or do not also have major depression. Study participation will involve 3 on-site laboratory visits over 6 days. Participants will be asked to not use marijuana for 3 of those days. Participants will complete mobile phone surveys multiple times each day, wear a watch to assess sleep quality, and provide blood samples for testing at each laboratory visit. At the final laboratory visit, participants will complete a stress task.

This study will examine how marijuana use can affect oral bacteria and brain health in people with HIV and without HIV. Early studies show that marijuana users have more oral bacteria than non-marijuana users. The increase in bacteria is believed to affect brain health. Participation in the study will be one visit. The visit will take approximately 120 minutes.

Participants will undergo a screening process over telehealth to confirm eligibility. There is a second telehealth visit to complete questionnaires, a cognitive testing battery, and a medical history. There is one visit in the clinic where participants will provide urine and saliva samples for drug and alcohol testing and a blood sample for a lipid testing, and complete additional cognitive tasks. They will then complete CREMA sessions (Cue Reactivity Ecologic Momentary Assessment) at home, two times a day for ten days. CREMA sessions include answering questions about marijuana use and sleep, and rating stress and craving.

The goal of this project is to better understand the relationship between tobacco/nicotine and cannabis using behavioral economics during a tobacco/nicotine quit attempt. All participants will receive tobacco/nicotine cessation treatment (smoking and/or vaping treatment) for 12 weeks. To qualify, participants must be between the ages of 18-25 and use tobacco products (smoke cigarettes and/or vape nicotine) and use cannabis (in any form). Participants do not need to be interested in quitting cannabis/marijuana to qualify. This study is being conducted by the Medical University of South Carolina. All procedures are conducted remotely and there is no in-person visits are needed.
