Summary

The purpose of this study is to determine the change in use of guideline recommended cefazolin as surgical prophylaxis for outpatient orthopedic patients undergoing elective hip or knee procedures with a documented penicillin allergy after implementation of an allergy reconciliation and/or penicillin allergy skin testing program of patients.Penicillin allergies are often falsely reported. Most documented penicillin allergies lack a true type I IgE mediated response, and are often drug intolerance as opposed to a true allergic reaction. The accuracy of said allergies can be confirmed through the use of penicillin allergy skin testing.
